Description: The heartwood is a rich reddish-brown initially, but it ages to a darker colour, losing some of the reddish tint. It is generally straight- grained, with a fairly fine and even texture. The sapwood is clearly differentiated from the heartwood and is paler.
Properties: Cherry has good steam bending characteristics, and has medium properties in terms of resistance to shock loads, bending and crushing. Cherry works well with both hand and machine tools. Cherry can be polished to an excellent finish and also strains well, though some prior degreasing may be necessary for best results.
Uses: Cherry is prized for furniture and cabinetmaking, turnery and carving. It is also used for domestic ware, toys, gunstocks, musical instruments, and as a decorative veneer.
